It’s up to you.
As a business owner or manager, it is up to you to provide the staff with a work environment that will result in the highest individual and collective productivity. There are many proven ways of achieving this; like incorporating more plants or wall art, providing fantastic lunch room amenities, or comfier desk chairs. However, we are here to discuss how maintaining a clean and tidy office can really create a lasting productive work environment.
Mess creates distraction. In a workplace that is cluttered with irrelevant materials, your staff are more likely to become distracted and lose sight of their current objective. But In worse cases, mess creates stress. When the clutter snowballs into a mismanaged catastrophe, important documents will get lost, causing stress among workers, and huge disruptions within business operations. Obviously that’s worse case scenario, and if that’s what your office has become then we’d advise you take action now!
Our advice on controlling clutter is to get everyone participating in at least a once a week “de-clutter” of personal and communal spaces. Try and implement a minimalist approach, and encourage workers to have only what they need on their desks, and dispose of any obsolete material. You’ll be shocked by the positive impact it has on the visual aesthetic of your workplace, and of course overall productivity.
Looking beyond obvious mess, it’s equally as important consider general cleanliness and hygiene. Your staff spend all day in the workplace, so it’s critical that they’re pleased by their surrounding environment. Staff morale and general attitude towards work can be terribly influenced by things like a smelly bathrooms, or dusty surfaces. Workers may see this negligence as a reflection of the value a business owner may put into ensuring their staff are happy within their environment. And a worker who does not feel highly valued, will never be as productive as one that does.
If you’re not actually aware of any issues with the current cleaning service, then have an open discussion with your team. We guarantee that you will identify some concerns that could very well be preventing optimal workplace productivity.
